[Scroll to third item] Conference to examine border media coverage
EL PASO — Media coverage of the United States-Mexico border will be the focus of the Reinventing Community Media Conference on Wednesday and Thursday at the University of Texas at El Paso. Organizers of the event said community leaders, educators, students and members of the community are invited to discuss the creation and strengthening of a community-oriented media to cover the border.
It will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Bob Moore, editor of the Fort Collins Coloradoan and former executive editor of the El Paso Times, will present the lecture “Newspapers as Change Agents: The Atlanta Journal in the Civil Rights Era” at 6 p.m. in the Union Cinema, inside UTEP’s Union Building East.
The free event continues Thursday with events including a 9 a.m. speech by University of Colorado School of Journalism professor Michael McDevitt titled “History and Trends: Ethics andCommunity-oriented Journalism” and a brown bag conversation at noon by El Paso Times editor Chris Lopez titled “A New Vision for the El Paso Times.” Both presentations will be at the Toms Rivera Conference Center, on the third floor of the Union Building East.
